NA body approves Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill

ISLAMABAD:The standing committee on Law,Justice and Parliamentary Affairs on Monday unanimously approved ,”The code of criminal procedure(amendment) bill,2008 regarding the statutory bails during the period of appeals and trials. The Standing Committee on Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs met here under the Chairpersonship of Begum Nasim Akhter Chaudhry, MNA to discuss the, (i). The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill 2008 (Statutory Bail Section 497), (ii). The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2009 (ordinance No. XXXII of 2009). (Statutory Bail to women), (iii).

The Note of dissent by Mr. Zahid Hamid, MNA on Arbitration (International Investment Disputes) Bill, 2009, (iv). The Note of dissent by Mr. Zahid Hamid, MNA on Recognition and Enforcement (Arbitration Agreements and Foreign Arbitral Awards) Bill, 2009, (v). Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2008 (Counterfeiting documents resembling National Prize Bonds), and (vi). Criminal Law (Amendment) bill 2008 (Obnoxious telephone calls).

The Committee approved, “The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2008 (Statutory Bail Section 497)” unanimously regarding the statutory. Bails during the period of appeals and trials. The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2009 (ordinance No. XXXII of 2009), (Statutory Bail to women) was clubbed with the aforementioned Bill by inserting provision, therefore The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2009 (ordinance No, XXXII of 2009) was repealed.

The amendments proposed by Mr, Zahid Hamid, MNA in the note of dissent regarding the Arbitration. (International Investment Disputes) Bill, 2009 were discussed and decided that the amendments as proposed be incorporated in the Bill.

Moreover the amendments proposed by Mr. Zahid Hamid, MNA in “The Recognition and Enforcement (Arbitration Agreements and Foreign Arbitral Awards) Bill, 2009” were also discussed in detail with the Board of Investment and M/o Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs. It was deferred for further discussion with the direction to make the amendments more comprehensive and viable.

The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2008 (Counterfeiting documents resembling National Prize Bonds) was discussed and approved with slide amendments unanimously with the direction to enhance the sentence of punishment from five to ten years in the offence of illegal dealings of Prize Bonds. While the Criminal Law (Amendment) bill, 2008 (Obnoxious telephone calls) was deferred for further discussion.
