Mukhtar’s notice to daily

MULTAN, April 12,2005: Mukhtar Mai, the victim of Meerwala gang-rape case, has served a legal notice through her lawyer on a local Urdu daily seeking apology for “publishing malicious material against her.”

Speaking at a news conference here on April 12, she said that some unscrupulous elements were misguiding people about the facts of her ordeal, although the matter was now with the Supreme Court.

She said the people who had launched the smear campaign against her were the elements having feudal mindset who did not want to give women equal rights in the society. She also accused the management of the newspaper for allegedly hurling life threats on her lawyer Rashid Rehman when he served the notice.

Speaking on the occasion, advocate Rashid Rehman said that the newspaper had been asked to publish regret within five days, otherwise she would have the right to file a damages suit against its management to the tune of Rs50m.
