Mukhtaran seeks govt help for setting up women’s crisis centre

MULTAN, April 18,2005: Mukhtaran Mai has appealed to the government to establish a women crisis centre at Meerwala, Muzaffargarh.

Talking to newsmen here on April 17, Mukhtaran Mai said that the Canadian High Commission had transferred funds in the account of Mukhtaran Mai Foundation for the construction of roads, a dispensary and vocational institute for women. She said that PM’s Adviser Nilofar Bakhtiar would soon visit Meerwala. She maintained that feudal lords were main hurdle in the provision of basic amenities to the people of remote areas like Meerwala. Mai said that security had been tightened since the Mastois got relief and she was feeling herself secure and safe. She vowed to wage a crusade against those elements who were subjecting women to violence and sexual harassment. She said she had served a defamation notice to those who had levelled charges of funds embezzlement against her.

She said she had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the judgement of the Lahore High Court, Multan bench, while some elements had filed a contempt of court petition against her and her supporters. Some elements are trying to affect the judicial proceedings by presenting fabricated and concocted stories before the general public, she added.
