KARACHI:Former model and journalist Quratulain Ali Khan was found dead after dying of suffocation in her apartment in Karachi on Saturday evening.

The deceased, who was commonly known as Annie Ali Khan, is believed to have taken her own life with foul play being ruled out by the authorities.

“Our initial investigation shows that she [Khan] died of suffocation after setting her books ablaze while trying to commit suicide,” District South SSP Omar Shahid Hamid told The Express Tribune.

“We haven’t found any evidence which might prove she was murdered, however, we will continue our probe,” he added.

The police and the volunteers from the different welfare associations found her body from the Qasr-e-Zainab building in Karachi’s red-zone area near Gymkhana.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities, where doctors also confirmed that she died of suffocation.

The doctors at the medico-legal section said that they did not find any injury or burn marks on her body.Furthermore, they have collected samples to send them in for chemical examination.

SSP Hamid further said that the former model lived alone after being separated from her husband, who resides in the United States.

Artillery Maidan police station SHO Safdar Mashwani said that the deceased was a writer.“Her relative told us she suffered from mental issues, we’ve handed her body over to the heirs after completing legal formalities,” Mashwani said.

“She was already dead when we reached the scene after her neighbours told us they smelt smoke rising from the apartment,” he added.
