MMA takes up press freedom issue in Senate

ISLAMABAD – The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) has moved three adjournment motions in the Senate against the recent incidents of violation of the press freedom.

The MMA leader, Senator Professor Khurshid Ahmad, expressed his strong reaction over the incidents and moved motion to take up the issue in the Senate.

He reacted strongly to a report that the regional producer of a private channel, Syed Mohsin Naqvi, was detained at his residence in Karachi apparently to stop him from accompanying a national leader on his return to the country. Such incidents, he pointed out, clearly involved violation of fundamental rights of citizens.

“Freedom of press and information and freedom of movement,” he explained, “are fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution and represent the very soul of democracy.”

He further referred to a private TV channel that had announced to telecast an interview of PML-N chief Shahbaz Sharif, but had to apparently cancel the programme in view of intervention from officials.

“Freedom of press and information represent the very soul and breadth of democracy; and such violations of this freedom is a threat to the evolution of democratic system,” he added.
