Ministry of IT & Telecom approves 14 projects

KARACHI – The Ministry of IT and Telecom on April 6, approved 14 projects worth over Rs300 million to automate various public sector organizations and departments in the federal and provincial governments.

The approval was given at a meeting of the Departmental Development Working Party (DDWP) chaired by the Federal IT Secretary Khalid Saeed. Other senior officials of the ministry and the departments concerned attended the meeting. Two of the projects approved would be implemented under the Tameer-e-Pakistan Programme.

“Among them one project deals with the extension of underground cable from Shah Yousaf exchange to Kundan Khurd and Kundan Kala Tehsil Shahpur, District Sargodha, while the other project provides for six single-channel VHF Systems in districts Badin and Mirpurkhas,” said a ministry statement.

Out of the other 12 projects, one would be implemented in Punjab where relevant record about firearms licenses would be computerized.

Upon completion of the project, firearms licenses will be issued on computer generated cards, similar to the national identity cards issued by the Nadra. Under another similar project, registration process in the same areas would also be computerized.

The computerized registration deeds would be linked to the computerized land revenue records, which are already being implemented in Lahore.

“As several citizen services are offered at the provincial level, the ministry is funding 75 per cent cost of these provincial projects to trigger off the spread of IT-enabled citizen services,” said the statement.

The committee also approved the project for providing computer applications at the PM Secretariat to automate the functions of the eight sections of the secretariat.

The office automation project includes focused training of the users and as the users get proficient in the use of computers more advanced application would be introduced.

During the meeting, extension of the computer automation at the National Assembly was also approved, whereby newly created standing committees of the assembly would be able to make use of the computerized system.

The Ministry of IT has fully funded the automation of the Export Promotion Bureau.

Under the project the regional offices of the EPB would be linked with the head office of the EPB in Karachi, which is already electronically linked with the commercial councillors in the foreign mission.

The meeting noted that speedy availability of information would help the exporters avail more opportunities and increase their exports.

“The meeting emphasized the importance of training, capacity building, and quality assurance to ensure that the implementation is done professionally and that projects are sustainable after completion,” added the statement.
