Ministry grooms 21,665 women councillors

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Women’s Development has so far trained 21,665 women councillors across the country under its Women’s Political School to effectively perform their duties as public representatives. The $4.5 million project has been funded by Norway and is being implemented by the Ministry of Women’s Development in collaboration with the UN Development Programme. National Project Manager Rehana Hashmi said on Tuesday that the programme was designed to train 27,461 women councillors countrywide in March, which she added would also help make these representatives dynamic leaders.

She said that 13,992 women councillors in Punjab, 1,850 in NWFP, 1,537 in Balochistan and 4,286 in Sindh had been trained so far. She said the syllabus for women representatives included introduction of the local government system, the study of decentralisation and its link with development, gender sensitisation, advocacy and its methods, formation of monitoring committees and their role, budget preparation and approval, the role and duties of political and administrative officials and their hierarchy in the local government system. She said that besides women councillors, the programme had been widely appreciated by senior officials.
