Meeting flays detaining two newsmen

MIRPURKHAS – A meeting of Mirpurkhas Union of Journal­ists have strongly condemned the anti-narcotic force for detaining two reporters and their manhandling along with using abusive language in Karachi.

The meeting was held the other day under the presidentship of Afaq Ahmed.

Those attended the meeting included Muhammad Hashim Shar, Dost Ali Bhatti, Saleem Azad, Najeeb Sambhri, Barkat Ali, Ghulam Rasool Mugheri, Asghar Mirrani, Qamaruddin, Manak Leghari, Shahid Iqbal etc.

The meeting passed a resolution while demanding President General Pervez Musharrafand Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to take immediate notice of the excesses of anti-narcotics force in the case of two journalists and keeping them in illegal confinement.

The meeting termed this act as violation of freedom of Press. Afaq Ahmed deplored that in these days, government functionaries were creating hurdles in the way of professional duties of newsmen in order to hide their corrupt activities.

He said that both journalists of GEO had reached at the time of raid, while the officials of the forces were trying to do corruption.

Ghulam Rasool Mugheri regretted that during by­election of Thar, two local journalists Muhammad Khalid and Zubair Ahmed Mujahid were also detained by the Rangers’ personnel at the chek posf of Wajeto, taluka Mithi and also broke their cameras and used abusive language.

Hashim Shar urged the authorities concerned to provide safety to the journalists during performance of their professional duties.
