Media women’s role in fighting violence

LAHORE: The second day of South Asian Women in Media’s regional conference began with the presentation of the working committee’s reports.

Some of the recommendations were: newsrooms to be made more women ‘inclusive’; SAWM’s website content be in other regional languages apart from English; the setting up of a blog or e-group to reach out to more people.

Regarding the portrayal of women in the media, it was recommended that they should not be depicted as ‘weak’ beings; women journalists be given harder beats; development news pertaining to women be highlighted, et cetera. Similarly, recommendations were put forth discussing the gender code of ethics and extremism, society and gender relations in South Asia.

In the wake of the GHQ headquarters assault, Imtiaz Alam commented that Pakistan could not afford terrorism within the country and that the journalists should be watchful and supportive of the changes taking place.

Federal Minister for Information Qamaruzzaman Kaira admitted the presence of more women in the media world today. He advised the formation of an organisation that could monitor gender-sensitive reporting.

SAWM Pakistan President Rehana Hakim, former minister for information and broadcasting Sherry Rehman, Bandana Rana from Nepal, Sharmini Boyle from Sri Lanka and Mehmal Sarfraz also spoke.
