Media will cover elections, says Musharraf

*President says Benazir misleading world *Most people support emergency rule

ISLAMABAD: President General Peryez Musharraf has said that the media would be allowed to cover the upcoming elections.

In an interview with Fox News channel telecast by PTV late on Monday, the president urged the media to follow the media code of conduct.

“The code of conduct does not mean that they should not criticise,” he said.

Musharraf said that he had no problem with the media criticising him or the government, adding that the government wanted the media not to carry out defamation, distortion of facts, vulgarity and humiliation of the country’s esteemed organisations and institutions.

About the world’s response to the emergency rule, he said the world “must understand the ground realities” and not be misled by a few opposition leaders who wanted to undermine him.

BB misleading world: About former premier Benazir Bhutto, he said she was trying to mislead the world by stating that elections would be postponed or the democratic process would be stopped.

He said her statements on Dr Qadeer, Pakistan’s nuclear programme and inviting foreign forces to strike inside Pakistan had gone against the public opinion.

Musharraf said the emergency rule was not meant for restricting opposition parties, but to control worsening law and order in the country, Online reported.

Majority people support emergency: He said Pakistan’s majority population was rural and supported the emergency rule, adding that some urban non-government organisations were rallying against the emergency rule.
