Media urged to highlight secret agencies’ conduct with journalists

LAHORE: Speakers at a seminar said that that media should highlight the issues regarding misbehaviour of intelligence agencies with journalists.

Media should highlight these issues like they are highlighting corruption of the politicians and the conspiracies against the free and independent judiciary, speakers said during a seminar on “Unaccountable Harassment By Intelligence Agencies” organised by South Media Commission at South Asia Free Media Association (Safma) office on Monday.

They said that during the past few months, agencies have misbehaved with two journalists, Umar Cheema and Sarmed Manzoor. They said that they entered into the house of Sarmed Manzoor in Islamabad without permission and tried to harass him and his family. The seminar was addressed by senior journalist Arif Nizami, I. A Rehman, Khalid Choudhry and General Secretary Safma, Imtiaz Aalam.

Speaking on the occasion, Acting President People’s Party Punjab Samiullah Khan criticised a section of media that saying it did not highlight the issue of misbehaving of agencies with their reporter Umar Cheema.

He accused the group of launching campaign against Kerry-Lugar Law and the people of Pakistan were aware of the fact that who is behind them. PML-N MNA Khawaja Saad Raffique condemned the incidents and said that media should also highlight these issues as they were highlighting other issues.
