`Media can help build responsible society`
KARACHI: Federal Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan has stressed the key role media has to play in building a responsible society.
She was speaking at a lunch she hosted for newspaper editors at a hotel here on Saturday.
The minister said the media only mirrored the image of society and conveyed to the government and policy-makers the problems and difficulties of the common man.
Dr Firdous also highlighted the role of media for the cause of democracy and strengthening democratic institutions.
She said the fiscal space within the budget was not enough to take populist decisions.
“A political government which comes to power with the mandate of the masses would not like to take unpopular decisions. But at the same time it tries to make efforts to provide relief to the masses,” she said.
Dr Firdous said the PPP was a party of the federation and enjoyed the mandate of all provinces.
“We want that concerted efforts be made for serving the people and all the parties should contribute their bit towards this goal.”
The information minister said corruption was a major concern of every Pakistani, civil society and the media.
She said the government was taking note of alleged irregularities highlighted by the media and at the same time it was taking remedial measures.
