Marui’s role highlighted

MITHI: On the second day of Marui festival, a literary conference was held under the aegis of Sindh cultural department at the Tharparkar press club auditorium here on Tuesday.

Speaking as chief guest, Dr Fahmida Hussain, chairperson of the Sindhi Language Authority, said Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai in Sur Marui of his Risalo depicted all the ideals of successful life in the role of Marui. “We should not measure her greatness by raising questions about her caste, location of her grave, place of living and her religion.”

She said that impressed by her patriotism, chastity, valour and simplicity, Shah Bhitai immortalised Maui by compiling Sur Marui.

Scholar Agha Salim said Bhitai as well as Marui were icons of defiance. They rejected comforts of life and led a simple life.

Shamus Jafrani, Sindh secretary cultural department, said that the cultural department had decided to publish a comprehensive book on the character Marui. Writer and columnist Inam Sheikh said that history told that great personalities were either born in mountainous or desert regions. Soil of Thar where Marui was born has a distinct history and culture; her role has introduced Thar in proper perspectives.

Other speakers included Abdul Qadir Junejo, Dr Abdul Jabar Junejo, Prof Noor Ahmed Janjhi, Taj Joyo, Prof Waris Sangrasi, Arbab Nek Mohammad, Prof Mohammad Hingorjo, Ashraf Daras, Bharumal Amrani, and Dr Asad Juman.
