By Ishaq Tanoli

KARACHI: A district and sessions court on Friday sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for raping his stepdaughters.

The court found Abid Hussain guilty of subjecting his two teenage stepdaughters to sexual assault within the remit of the Zaman Town police station in May 2008.

The district and sessions judge (east), Sadiq Hussain Bhatti, who conducted the trial, pronounced the judgment after recording evidence of the prosecution witnesses and final arguments from both sides.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 and in case of non-payment, the convict would undergo an additional six-month imprisonment.

According to the judgment, the victims and other prosecution witnesses have fully implicated the accused in the commissioning of the offence and the same was corroborated by the medical evidence. The prosecution successfully proved its case against the accused, it added.

The accused was produced before the court in custody and the judge extended the benefit of Section 382-B (period of detention to be considered while awarding sentence of imprisonment) of the criminal procedure code to the convict and remanded him back to prison along with a conviction warrant to serve out the remainder of his sentence.

The prosecution said that complainant Shagufta’s first husband Faratullah had died and she had two daughters from him. Later, she married Abid Hussain.

The complainant was working in a factory when her husband, who used to stay at home, had raped his both stepdaughters, the prosecution said.

He also had warned them of dire consequences if they disclosed the matter to anyone, the prosecution added.

The prosecution said that the accused had been raping the girls for six months, but on May 12, 2008, his wife found out this when she saw him raping her daughters.

The victims’ mother lodged a case (168/2008) under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Pakistan Penal Code against her husband at the Zaman Town police station.

The police arrested the accused a couple of days after the incident and later he was remanded to jail custody.
