Man kills wife over custody battle

KARACHI: A man killed his wife over a child-custody dispute in Lyari and four other people were killed in separate incidents on Saturday, including two men who were shot during robberies. A sweeper named Moti Lal was arrested red-handed in Bhangi Para, Chakiwara, after he stabbed his 32-year-old wife, Jamna Bai. Bai left her husband’s house with her four children two years ago after a domestic dispute. According to the police, Lal visited his in-laws on Saturday to take custody of the children. A quarrel erupted and Lal attacked his wife. Jamna Bai received multiple injuries in her chest, abdomen and other areas of her body.

Neighbours gathered around when they heard Bai shouting, and Lal was handed over to the police. Bai died on the way to hospital. The deceased’s brother lodged an FIR against Lal. The body of a muezzin was found in a pool of blood from Jamia Masjid Hanfia in B Area, Korangi. Police said that Qari Abid hailed from Attock, and lived in the mosque’s Hujra, where unidentified men killed him by smashing his head in with a hammer. Elsewhere, the body of a young man was found from Sector 7D, Surjani Town. Police suspect that unidentified men kidnapped him and shot him in the head, before dumping his body near a vehicle. The deceased has yet to be identified, and was taken to the Edhi mortuary.

A young man identified as Abid was shot and his father was wounded in a mobile phone snatching incident in Korangi Industrial Area on Friday night. According to the police, unidentified motorcyclists intercepted the car in Millat Town, while Abid was returning home after picking up his father, Abdul Rashid, from work. They snatched Abid’s mobile phone and his mother’s jewellery. A few minutes later, Abdul Rashid called up his older son on his mobile phone to inform him about the incident. The robbers, who had apparently been watching nearby, returned and started firing, killing Abid, and injuring his father, who was shot twice. Another cash and mobile phone snatching incident took place at Shahrah-e-Faisal near the Kundan Wedding Lawn. Unidentified men shot 15-year-old Sufwan, who was taken to a private hospital, where he died during treatment.
