Man kills sister in judicial complex

PESHAWAR: Police protection proved insufficient as a girl was shot dead by her brother on the premises of the judicial complex here on Friday in what appeared to be an honour-related murder.

A police source said the girl, Ishrat, belonging to the Sherin Koti area in Mardan, had fled home some time ago and taken shelter in the Women Crisis Centre, Peshawar.

The girl was killed soon after she recorded her statement in the court in connection with the case of another girl.

The source said relatives of the girl had requested the judge to permit them to take her along with them but she had preferred to go to the Women Crisis Centre. As she came out of the court, the source said, a man opened fire on her. The girl was taken to hospital but she did not survive.

An official of the East Cantonment police station told Dawn that the accused, Aurangzeb, was brother of the girl.

He said the accused had been arrested from the site, adding he had also sustained injuries when police opened fire. The accused was taken to hospital under police custody.

The police official said another person who identified himself as maternal uncle of the girl was also arrested and a pistol was recovered from his possession.

Meanwhile, six people were arrested in another incident on the premises of a family court in the judicial complex.

A source said two rival parties after attending the court proceedings had thrashed each others. The East Cantonment police, however, avoided providing further details about the incident.
