Man given five years in prison for trying to kill wife

KARACHI: A sessions court on Monday sentenced a man to five years in prison in an attempted murder case.

The court found Aleemuddin guilty of trying to kill his wife and her two relatives in June 2008 within the remit of the Quaidabad police station.

District and Sessions Judge (Malir) Syed Kausar Ali Bukhari pronounced his verdict after recording testimonies of witnesses and final arguments from both sides.

The court also directed the convict to pay Rs15,000 as compensation to the victim, and in case of default he would have to undergo an additional six-months imprisonment.The court ruled that the convict was entitled to the benefit of Section 382-B (period of detention to be considered while awarding sentence of imprisonment) of the criminal procedure code.

According to the prosecution, on June 11, 2008 the accused broke into the house of his in-laws and attacked his wife and her two family members and stabbed them with a sharp-edged weapon. After hearing cries of the victims, area people gathered outside the house and captured the suspect when he was trying to escape from the crime-scene. The prosecution added that the accused suspected that her wife had illicit relations with a man. A case (FIR 174/2008) was registered against the accused under Section 324 (attempt to commit qatl-i-amd) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of a relative of the victim woman at the Quaidabad police station.The accused was produced in court in custody and the judge remanded him back to the prison with his conviction warrant to serve out the remainder of his sentence.
