Light at the end of the tunnel

Sir: It is commonly said that the media has the capacity and power to promote positive change. Development journalism recognises the reality of underdevelopment and the fact that development is a valid social goal that the media must actively pursue. Thus the main characteristic of development journalism is the deliberate and active role of the media in pressing for change. Pakistan today faces myriad problems of development: poverty, poor education and health, inadequate agricultural practices, lack of adequate infrastructure, poor social services, a lack of political maturity and accountability, sectarian and religious conflicts, gender inequality, etc. In all this darkness, a free, independent and responsible media can be the light at the end of the tunnel.
