The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to the federal government and other relevant authorities in response to a petition seeking the restoration of access to micro-blogging platform X (formerly Twitter), the improvement of internet speed nationwide,  the removal of bans on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and other restricted social media platforms.

Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal presided over the hearing, based on a petition filed by journalist Hafiz Shakir Mahmood through his counsel, Advocate Azhar Siddique. According to data from the World Population Review (WPR), the petition highlighted that Pakistan ranks 198th globally in terms of internet speed, trailing behind nations such as Palestine, Bhutan, Ghana, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, and Libya.

The petitioner also appealed for restrictions on using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to be removed.

The court has directed the federal government and other relevant authorities to submit their responses to further proceed.
