LHC calls for evidence to prove grounds were other than those before SC

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has asked the local lawyer M. D. Tahir to place on record the evidence and the documents to prove that his case was different from the case filed before the Supreme Court of Pakistan by the Jang Group’s management.

These directions were passed by the court in a writ petition filed by a local lawyer M. D. Tahir contending that government was victimising the Jang Group and thus suppressing the freedom of Press.

He submitted that the advertisements of the Jang Group have been banned and quota for the paper has been suspended. Moreover, the tax cases have been re-opened against the group just to pressurize it.

He said that some elements in a bid to appease the Prime Minister were undertaking this whole activity. He said that one sided so called Current Affairs programmes are being run on the Pakistan Television just to malign the Jang Group and its management. He submitted that under Section 10 of the Pakistan Broadcasting Act 1973, all Pakistanis have equal right to present their point of view on the Pakistan Television. He submitted that Mir Shakil ur Rahman of Jang Group may also be allowed to appear on the PTV to defend himself. Justice Ehsanul Haq observed that the Group had already filed a petition before the Supreme Court which was being heard by a full bench of august court. He asked the petitioner to file the same application before the Supreme Court.

M.D. Tahir submitted that the Jang Group has raised altogether different points in its application before the S. C. He said that he was filing this application being a reader of daily Jang and government was trying to deprive him his access to free information.
