Lawyers to uphold Press freedom

LAHORE- The Lahore High Court (LHC) Bar Association has extended every cooperation, which is needed to defend freedom of the Press.

President of the Bar Israrul Haq Mian, along with the Secretary, Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, said that apart from protecting the independence of Judiciary, rule of law and the human rights, the lawyers are also committed to uphold freedom of the Press in society.

Addressing the journalists after inaugurating the Press chamber for journalists at the LHC premises, he said the Bar will stand by the Press on any call which aims at preserving freedom of speech and the Press.

President Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Saeed Aasi, on the occasion thanked the Bar for allocating a space for journalists in the LHC premises.

He referred to the amendment in the Anti-Terrorism Act and pointed out the government objective of confining freedom of the Press. Aasi called upon the lawyers’ community to provide legal assistance for preservation of the Press freedom and added, his body has decided to question the amended ordinance before the court of law.

Israrul pledged Aasi every legal help in advocating the PFUJ petition before the court of law.

Earlier, Israrul Haq and Saeed Aasi opened the Press chamber for the Superior Courts journalists. Besides many others, the Vice President of the Bar Ch Ijaz Ahmad, Rana Mashhood Ahmad, the Finance Secretary Mian Irfan Ikram and a number of journalists were also present on the occasion.
