LANDI KOTAL, Feb 3: Two workers of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have gone missing in the Khyber tribal region, according to officials.

The Islamabad-based communication officer of the ICRC, Sitara Jabeen, told Dawn on Sunday that the workers who were going to the Torkham checkpoint, near the Afghan border, had disappeared in the Khyber region on Saturday.

She said that the missing persons had not contacted the main office. The ICRC workers had left their Peshawar sub-office on Saturday morning and were passing through the Jamrud sub-division of the Khyber region when they lost contact with their office in Peshawar.

The political administration expressed ignorance about the disappearance of the ICRC workers and said that the ICRC had neither informed the local administration about their visit to Torkham nor demanded an escort for them.

An official said that all outsiders were supposed to inform the local authorities and seek permission before embarking on a journey through the tribal region.
