Lahore High Court Seeks PEMRA Response on Petition Against Maryam Nawaz’s Speeches

Pakistan Press Foundation

On January 16 the Lahore High Court (LHC) sought a reply from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) within two weeks in response to a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Akmal Khan Bari regarding Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s statements regarding former premier Imran Khan.

Presiding over the hearing, Justice Farooq Haider heard the petition. As per the petitioner, Maryam Nawaz’s televised “allegedly defamatory and scandalous” speeches and press conferences were inappropriate and inciting unrest among PTI supporters.  The petitioner argued that such statements undermined public peace and political harmony and requested the court to direct PEMRA to ban their broadcast.

The petition, filed through Advocate Sardar Khurram Latif Khosa, named PEMRA, Maryam Nawaz, and 11 television channels as respondents. It contends that PTI, described as the largest political party in the country, is being politically victimized.
