Lahore High Court Grants Bail to Social Media Activist Ruba Haider in Cybercrime Case
On February 21, the Lahore High Court approved the post-arrest bail of social media activist Ruba Haider, who is accused of uploading doctored images of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz online.
Haider’s lawyer, advocate Azhar Siddique, argued that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had filed the case based on “political considerations.” He contended that the prosecution failed to prove whether the social media account allegedly used to share AI-generated images belonged to the petitioner. He further argued that the FIA had acted both as the complainant and investigator, which he termed unlawful.
The court approved her bail.
On January 22, the FIA Cybercrime Wing registered 18 cases and arrested 17 individuals, including two women, for creating, sharing, and promoting AI-generated images and videos targeting Maryam Nawaz and the UAE President.
FIA officials had stated that efforts were underway to extradite overseas perpetrators, including Adil Raja and Shehbaz Gill, through Interpol. The FIA has categorized offenders into four groups—content creators, sharers, commenters, and those who liked the posts.
