Lahore Bar for Moin’s resignation over Karachi blast

LAHORE- The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) while condemning in the strongest words the blast at the Nawa-i-Waqt office in Karachi has demanded resignation of the Interior Minister for his failure in controlling law and order situation.

Passing a resolution against the attack on Nawa-i-Waqt, the Bar has also demanded judicial inquiry through judges of the Supreme Court, into the incident.

The Bar unanimously carried the resolution presented by advocate Hafiz Abdur Rahman Ansari at the General House meeting chaired by the Bar President, Pir Kalim Ahmad Khursheed.

Barrister Zafarullah Khan, advocate Shamsur Rahman, Shahid Mahmood Bhatti, Dr A. Basit, M. lqbal Bhutta and Pir Kaleem Khursheed spoke on the resolution. In their address, they flayed the incompetence of the government to ensure safety to the Press and the pressmen. They held the government directly responsible for the bomb blast as the Nawa-i-Waqt has always spoken for the people and their rights while taking note of the anti-State and inimical policies of the government. They said that Nawa-i-Waqt has also huge contribution to guiding the nation against the anti-State designs.

They said that freedom of expression is the fundamental right and the Bar will not leave any stone unturned to protect and safeguard this freedom and will oppose any effort to suppress the truth. The speakers said that attack on Nawa-i-Waqt office through a bomb blast, is an eye-opener for every one. However, it must be kept in mind that no harm should be done to the upholders of justice and truth. The Bar also announced to stand by Nawa-i-Waqt and those who have kindled the flame of truth despite all kinds of threats.

The resolution stated that blast at the Nawa-i-Waqt office is a significant incident as this newspaper has always resisted the dictatorship and so it is doing today. It said blast in fact is an attack on the freedom of Press and this act is highly condemnable and must be termed as sheer terrorism.

It expressed sympathy with the families of the victims and expressed solidarity of lawyers with Nawa-i-Waqt. The resolution demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and severe punishment under the law. The resolution also demanded resignation of the Interior Minister on the ground that he failed to control law and order situation. Secretary of the Bar, Abid Saqi Bhatti conducted the proceedings.
