KUJ condemns police threats to journalist

KARACHI: The Karachi Union of journalists (KUJ) has condemned the crude and unveiled threats issued by the Sindh Police against Mazhar Abbas, chief reporter of Star and former office-bearer of KUJ.

In a statement issued here on Friday, the President and General Secretary of the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ), Wirasat Hussnain Rizvi and Afzal Baloch, have said that it is for the first time that the Police had the temerity to threaten blatantly a respected journalist in such a manner. The grave nature of the threats could be gauged from the following excerpt from the letter issued by the police spokesman on Friday. “Spokesman warned In case the “scribe” is not checked very stringent action would be taken against him under the law.”

KUJ leaders further said that it was a cruel irony that while the police is morally bound to respect the honour and safety of the citizens and to protect them against any indignities or bodily harm here that very department is negating its assigned role by hurling threats of reprisals at the reporter.

They said that such crude and vulgar threats could not deter the journalists’ fraternity from performing their duties honestly.

They also warned that only police department would be responsible if the former president of KUJ was subjected to any bodily harm or if his personal safety and security were jeopardized.

They appealed to Governor Sindh to take immediate note of these veiled threats and bring the delinquent office to book immediately
