Karo-kari needs no new laws, says Arbab

KARACHI — Karo-kari does not need new legislation since it is already murder, said Sindh Chief Minister Dr. Arbab Ghulam Rahim, who opposed the practice on October12.

He said that there should be no leniency for men involved in such deaths; they should be treated as murderers according to the law.

He termed honour killing un-Islamic and inhuman while talking to the press after attending a seminar on the gender reform action plan organized by the Ministry of Women’s Development.

However, he said that no one could be restrained from killing one of his female relatives for honour, but men should be dissuaded from taking such extremist steps. He said that he was not against the feudal system, but opposed declaring women “Garhi”. Dr. Rahim said that jirgas are held in upper Sindh and not in lower parts of the province.
