KARACHI: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has decided to collect data on the people implicated in cases of arson throughout the province.

The HRCP has expressed grave concern over reports of the misuse of state machinery against political workers, following the assassination of PPP Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto.

In a statement issued Thursday, HRCP Secretary General Iqbal Haider and Vice Chairman Zohra Yusuf said that the organization had serious concerns over reports that the government was using Benazir Bhutto’s death and as an excuse to enter peopleÂ’s homes, arrest hundreds of thousands of political workers and create an environment of fear. They said that the HRCP has decided to collect all the available data on the thousands of political party workers and other citizens that have been arrested or are wanted by the local administration in Sindh.

They appealed to all political parties, welfare organizations, NGOs and citizens concerned to cooperate with the HRCP and give as much details as possible of the people who have been arrested or intimidated by authorities. The information can be sent to the HRCP Karachi office: Unit no. 8, Ilaco House, Abdullah Haroon Road, Saddar, Karachi.

The HRCP will issue a detailed report once all the information has been collected.
