KARACHI – The City District Government Karachi has initiated development projects worth approximately over Rs 55 billion during the last 2 years out of which a total of projects costing Rs.32 billion have been completed or entered into final stages, said a statement issued here Tuesday.

“Out of all sectors, the Water and Sewerage part of the development projects has been given especial focus while first time a huge amount of almost Rs.27 billion was earmarked for rehabilitation of W&S infrastructure in the city that includes Rs.4 billion projects carried out in all four industrial zones of.Karachi.

Nazim Karachi has presented a best example of serving citizens without any favouritism by giving Rs.50 million each to 18 towns and Rs.9.6million to every union council of the city for carrying out water and sewerage related works in their jurisdiction. The City Nazim also introduced a new Citizens Complaints Information System 1339 to provide direct access to public to high ups regarding their daily problems.

Not only the Karachi Greater Water Supply Project K-III was completed within these two years but another water supply project K-IV was studied to cater requirements of the city for the next 50 years. Besides a Greater Karachi Water Sewerage Project S-3 costing Rs.8 billion has also been worked out with its PC-1 was approved by the federal government. During the tenure of Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal over Rs.20 billion worth projects regarding works and services were either completed or heading to completion. An amount of RS.1.5 billion was spent on the public health sector while the same amount was allocated to the projects carried on in the education sector,” it further added.

The city of Karachi got more and more recreational facilities over the period of last two years when besides construction of new parks many existing parks were also rehabilitated with a cost of Rs.1.5 billion. A sum of Rs.500 million was spent on the improvement of transport system in the city whiles the major expenditure of Rs.1.5 billon was made in the Solid Waste Management Sector.

The government also gave importance to modern technology during this period and there­fore projects costing RS.500 million were initiated or completed in the field of information technology to improve overall functioning of the city government system. The islands of Karachi also got due attention under the present city government and first time in the history of these old habitats a project of supplying potable water through under sea pipelines was initiated.

In order to improve the water supply and distribution in the city 27 trunk lines for water or sewerage were laid down in the last two years and a project of desalination plant was started at the Hawksbay to covert salt water into drinkable water.

In the health sector Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal took many important measures during the last 24 months including modernization of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and its adjacent Trauma Centre by providing latest machinery and equipments and renovating both buildings. Besides this the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases was also upgraded and provided with latest equipments to provide better and quality medical aid to heart patients. 1

The City Government has also initiated projects of converting existing government schools into model schools and up gradation of existing colleges and establishment of poly technique institutes in the city some of these projects have been already completed while the remaining ones heading to completion.

Under Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal the City Government has also took various steps to vacate government lands from the occupation of land mafia. Besides A 17 acre piece of land at Jheel park and other occupied lands were fi-eed from the occupation of land grabbers during the above tenure.

Nazim Karachi has also started work on the parking plaza project to provide parking facilities to citizens at busiest places like Saddar. The City’s Fire Brigade was also provided with new vehicles and machinery in the last two years including 2 new latest snorkels while directives for procurement of another snorkel have also been issued to combat fire incidents in the city high rise buildings.
