KARACHI: Several bogies of Lahore bound Karachi Express derailed near Mehrabpur railway station in district Naushehro Feroz, railways sources said.

About 50 people were feared dead and dozens wounded in the train accident early Wednesday, foreign news agency reported.

The train was traveling between the southern port city of Karachi and eastern border city of Lahore when 12 coaches jumped the tracks at 2:25 am.

According to railway sources 1033 passengers were onboard the train when it departed from Karachi including a marriage party and D.S. Railways Lahore.

The incident took place about 400 kilometers’ distance from Karachi between Lakha Road and Mehrabpur railway stations. The engine of the train was separated from the bogies and 14 coaches were derailed from the rails.

According to foreign news agency about 50 passengers were killed and dozens wounded in the train accident, being transferred to nearby hospitals.

The train traffic has been suspended after the mishap. Rescuers were battling severe cold weather as well as darkness as they worked to retrieve the injured from the wreckage.

According to reports several persons have been trapped in derailed compartments of the train and crying for help.

The authorities have declared emergency at all nearby hospitals after the incident and doctors and paramedics were called at the medical facilities.

The railway authorities have directed Jinnah Express, Bahauddin Zakaria Express and Burraq Express to stop at nearby railways stations, which were departed from Karachi.
