Karachi Press Club holds Qura’an Khwani for Wali Khan Babar

Karachi: A Qura’an Khwani was held at Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Sunday to mark the second death anniversary of slain journalist Wali Khan Babar.

The event was attended, among others, by the representatives of Karachi Union of Journalists and KPC, including GM Jamali, Faheem Siddiqui, Faisal Aziz Khan, Abdul Qudoos, Imtiaz Khan Faran, Javed Chaudhry and Asif Jeay Ja and younger brother and other relatives of Wali Babar.

Wali Babar Khan (a Geo TV reporter) was martyred by unidentified people on January 13, 2011, in Liaquatabad No. 1 near the Apwa School while he was going home from office.

Strong protests were lodged by the unions representing journalists’ community, Karachi Press Club, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and various political parties.

The murder case was referred to Anti-Terrorism Court-III presided by Ghulam Mustafa Memon. The Special Investigation Unit was tasked to conduct investigation of the case. The accused including Mohammad Shahrukh, Faisal Mehmood, Mohammad Shakeel, Naveed alias Polka and Syed Mohammad Ali Rizvi were arrested in this case and charge-sheeted.

The Sindh High Court (SHC) had directed the ATC-III to issue its verdict in the murder case in 45 days.

The SHC had issued this direction while hearing a petition filed by slain Babar Wali Khan’s brother against the Home Department’s notification that shifted the trial inside the central prison from the ATC court due to security reasons. According to the police reports several eye-witnesses in this high-profile murder case had been killed. However, the ATC is yet to examine the case facts and record the evidences.
