Karachi Police Enforces New Social Media Policy, Officers Given Seven Days to Remove Inappropriate Content
On September 21, the Karachi police introduced a new social media policy requiring all officers and personnel to remove inappropriate content from their social media accounts within seven days.
The directive, issued by Additional Inspector General (IG) Javed Alam Odho, prohibits the use of official police resources such as vehicles, uniforms, and headquarters—in social media posts without prior approval.
The policy warns that any violation of the rules could result in disciplinary action, including suspension or dismissal. To ensure strict compliance with the new regulations, a letter has been circulated to all Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) and relevant senior officers.
In addition to these restrictions, the policy mandates that designated media teams will now manage all police-related social media content under the supervision of the concerned DIGs, Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), and unit heads. Only official police accounts will be authorized to share content related to law enforcement activities.
The Police notification stated: “Concerned offices/officers must not post, share or engage in videos that contain Mockery or disrespect of individuals based on race, gender, caste or religion. No personal, political, or religious views can be shared by police personnel on various social media platforms. Official social media platforms regarding police activities shall only be run by concerned DIGsP/SSsP/Unit Head Media Team.”
Similar policies have also been introduced in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, further restricting police officers’ use of social media for personal purposes.
