Justice Khawaja’s wife moves Pemra against channel
ISLAMABAD: Khawaja Asif Mahmood, advocate of the Supreme Court, on Tuesday filed a complaint with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) against a TV programme aired on May 29, 2014 on ARY News as the anchor alleged that Supreme Court judge, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, used his official position to sell the property of his wife to the Punjab government at an exorbitant amount.
According to the complainant, the facts presented in the programme were false and baseless. In fact, the ownership of the land measuring 2 Kanals 9 Marlas situated at the Lahore Ring Road, belonged to the wife of Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, was compulsorily acquired by Punjab government under theLand Acquisition Act, and was never bought by the Punjab government as alleged in the ARY programme.
The complainant stated that entire programme was deliberately designed to level false allegations against the judge and his wife. He further stated that on Feb 26, 2008 Board of Revenue, Punjab estimated the price of the land at Rs6,00,000 per marla and every affected owner of the land received the amount on the same rate. But wife of the SC judge along with all the land owners of the same area was dissatisfied with the rate of compensation. According to the Land Acquisition Act all of them raised objections before Board of Revenue, Punjab.
In his complaint, Khawaja Asif Mehmood said that Justice Jawwad S Khawaja had resigned as a judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on March 19, 2007 and the award of compensation was made on May 14, 2008. Moreover, while all the proceedings regarding compensation was in progress at that time, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja was not holding any official position rather he was working as a Professor of law at LUMS University.
The complainant requested the Pemra, in his prayer, that the authority should take notice and necessary action might be initiated against ARY and programme anchor for such a programme maligning the superior judiciary.
