RAWALPINDI: Legal expert Babar Sattar Advocate has said that capital punishment is not something pleasant. To send a man to gallows should give us a food for thought. We need to learn a lesson from the Shahzeb murder case. The matter should be welcomed to the extent that a family got justice, but simultaneously it has unearthed a number of flaws in the system.

President Women’s Wing of PTI Munazza Hasan MNA has said that people in Pakistan are murdered senselessly. Arms are easily accessible and they have come in the hands of youth. In view of the current law and order situation, capital punishment should be retained.

They expressed these views while talking to Hamid Mir, host of Geo News programme ‘Capital Talk’. PML-N leader and Minister of State Khurram Dastgir Khan also took part in discussion. During the programme, a list of some important events related to the Shahzeb case was also shown. Replying to different questions Babar Sattar said that the state edifice has crumbled and there is a dire need of restoring it.

The point to be noticed is the limit of tolerance of the new government. We hear about the thinking of a changed Nawaz Sharif, but the point to be noticed is how much bitter advice he is going to have and the extent of his tolerance. Khurram Dastgir said that in the battle between power and bribery, justice emerged victorious. In the Shahzeb case the role of judiciary and media has been extremely important. Media exposed the corruption and inefficiency of the investigating agencies. The latest judgment will create a fear in the minds of those who murder people on the strength of their power or influence.

Khurram Dastgir further said that within six months to a year it would become evident whether the cabinet is seriously working hard to solve the problems of people. Nawaz Sharif has kept the portfolios of defence and foreign affairs with himself, and if he feels that he has not been able to deliver, he may entrust these responsibilities to some one else. Munazza Hasan said that the confidence in law of those that had been shaken is now being restored. After the judgment we can hope for supremacy of law and we should hope that judgments like the one in Shahzeb case will continue to be handed down by the judiciary.
