‘Journalists’ killing tantamount to interfering in free media

ISLAMABAD: Attacks on journalists are not only condemnable but also tantamount to causing hurdles in the free dissemination of information to the general public.

Safety and protection of the journalists should be the top priority of the law enforcement agencies that were not only required to maintain law and order but also uphold the law and the constitution. This was stated by Press Council of Pakistan (PCP) Chairman Raja Shafqat Abbasi in a letter written to the Punjab inspector general of police (IGP). Abbasi urged the Punjab IG, “Arrest the killers of Raja Assad Hameed, court reporter, who was gunned down on March 26, 2009.”

The unidentified killers on motorcycle fired at him when he had just parked his car outside his house at Sadiqabad, Rawalpindi. His brother, Raja Amjad, reported the murder the same day with Sadiqabad Police Station.
