Journalists exempted from pillion riding ban

KARACHI- Journalists are exempted from the ban imposed on pillion riding. The Commissioner Karachi and DIG Traffic and Highways Sindh said this when they were informed about heated altercations between the reporter of a newspaper and Rangers over pillion riding.

“Journalists as well as children, women and the elderly are exempted from the ban, as reported by the national press,” said Commissioner Karachi Shafiqu-ur-Rahman Piracha.

DIG Traffic and Highways Sindh Yamin Khan when contacted, said: “I have not yet received a copy of the notification. There is no reason to stop journalists if they are exempted from the ban.” Earlier, the Rangers, accompanied by traffic police, intercepted lmtiaz Khan Faran, a senior reporter of Daily Awam, and roughed him up for carrying his colleague on his motorbike.

“I told them that journalists are exempted from pillion riding according to the commissioner’s notification but they would not listen to me,” Farhan said. “They had also stopped a number of other riders children and elders, telling them that only women were exempted.”

Asked to clarify the position through another notification, the Commissioner said, “That is not necessary, as the previous notification is sufficient. We will hold an inquiry and will issue instructions to the law-enforcers.”
