In Sukkur, journalists and other media workers held a protest demonstration outside the Khairpur Press Club on February 24, 2024, pledging to escalate their efforts in seeking justice for their esteemed colleague Jan Mohammad Mahar, who was murdered on the night between Aug 13 and 14, 2023 by unknown assailants near Saint Saviour School in Sukkur.

According to Dawn, amidst charged emotions, demonstrators voiced their dissatisfaction with the police and provincial authorities for their perceived failure to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators despite the passage of several months since the incident. Prominent figures who led the demonstration included Khan Mohammad Khan, President of the Khairpur Press Club, General Secretary Sanaullah Memon, former president Qadir Soomro, and senior journalist Mian Ghulam Hussain Fateh. Addressing the gathering, these leaders underscored Mahar’s reputation for courageous and principled reporting, emphasizing his dedication to amplifying the voices and concerns of the public to relevant authorities and elected representatives.

Expressing deep condemnation, the speakers lamented the silencing of Mahar’s bold journalistic voice by adversaries of truth and humanity. They criticized the previous and caretaker governments’ chief ministers and home ministers for their alleged failure to fulfill their duty in bringing Mahar’s killers to justice despite making lofty promises to do so.

In a unified call to action, the protesters urged the Sindh Inspector General of Police, the Sukkur Deputy Inspector General, and other relevant provincial authorities to expedite the arrest of Mahar’s assailants and all individuals involved in his senseless murder, Dawn added.

The News reported that on November 21, 2023, the Sukkur police had claimed to arrest three influential individuals on charges of harboring and facilitating the accused in the murder case Mahar.
