Journalists call off hunger strike

KARACHI, FEBRUARY 12: The Karachi Union of Journalists called off its indefinite strike on Friday following assurances by Mir Shakilur Rehman of Jang Group that the demands of the journalists had been accepted and a formal announcement in this respect would be made on Saturday.

According to a KUJ press release, Mir Shakil while visiting the hunger-strike camp at the Karachi Press Club said that the abolition of contract system had been demanded by all unions and he had decided to abolish it.

Regarding the withdrawal of intra-court appeals against the implementation of the sixth wage award, Mir Shakil said that he would put the matter before the All Pakistan Newspapers Society and he hoped that the matter would be solved amicably.

Earlier, a delegation led by PFUJ president Abdul Hameed Chhapra and APNEC chairman Shafiuddin Ashraf held a detailed meeting with the Jang group chief at the latter’s office.
