Journalists Beaten by Railway Police and Contractors at Cant Station

KARACHI, March 31: Railway Police detained the journalists following an attack on them by parking contractors of Cantonment Railway Station, Karachi on, Thursday, March 30, 2006.

According to Adil Jawad, reporter Daily Express Karachi, parking contractor of Cantonment Railway Station attacked Shabir Ahmed, reporter Daily Ummat Karachi with iron rods following a row over non payment of parking charges, who became outraged and started beating the journalist along with his colleagues.

Later on, Shabir called other journalists for help including Adil Jawad. The journalists went to Railway Police Station at Cantonment Railway Station to complaint against the attack on journalist.

The SHO of Railway Police, Baqar Gillani promised to go on spot but this was a delay tactics and after 15 minutes 10 to 15 people brought Shabir in Police Station with a policeman. They were continuously beating him. When the journalists in police station tried to save their colleague, SHO detained Adil Jawad (Daily Express), Shabir Ahmed (Daily Ummat) and Niaz Ahmed (Daily Jassarat) instead of arresting the contractor.

The SHO released the journalists when the journalist community staged protest outside the police station.
