Journalists barred from Bajaur

PESHAWAR, January 18 2006: The political administration of Bajaur Agency on Tuesday January 17 barred journalists from entering into the agency in the aftermath of the US airstrike that killed 18 people, on January 13.

According to a news report Haroon Rashid of BBC Urdu Service along with AVT Khyber reporter Mehmood Jan Babar and cameraman Waheedur Rehman, was denied entry into Bajaur Agency and the tribal police told them to go back to Peshawar as authorities had banned journalists.

The journalists were stopped at Darband entry point, the BBC correspondent added. The journalist staged a small demonstration at the site condemning the Bajaur administration’s move as an attempt to “gag the press”.

Federal Information Minister Sheikh Rashid said, the area is “under army control and this correspondent should talk to military people”.
