Journalists barred entry into North Waziristan

On 18 July 2007, police stopped two senior journalists and a cameraman from entering the North Waziristan Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan that border Afghanistan.

Dr. Shahid Masood, the host of a locally popular TV show, and Rahimullah Yusufzai, the executive editor of “The News” in Peshawar, were en route to Miranshah, the administrative headquarters of North Waziristan, to report on the situation in the troubled tribal region when they were prevented from crossing into the area by police.

When the journalists reminded the police of the government’s claim that there were no restrictions on members of the press visiting and reporting from tribal areas, the officers said they had received instructions two days earlier not to allow non-locals from entering the area because of a recent upsurge in violence.
