Journalist wins Canadian fellowship
LAHORE, April 17,2005: Bashir Ahmad Tariq, city editor with a local English newspaper, became the first Pakistani journalist to win Canada’s Gordon N Fisher Fellowship for 2005-2006. He will leave to spend an academic year at Toronto University’s Massey College in August.
The Alva Foundation-funded fellowship is awarded each year to one journalist from a Commonwealth country and the winner joins three or four Canadian fellows at Massey College. The fellowship covers university fees, accommodation, meals, air fare from Lahore to Toronto and back, trips to the US and the UK, winter clothing, books, visa fees and medical charges. A tour to Finland is also part of the fellowship. A possible trip to Russia is also anticipated. A $2,900 monthly stipend for the length of the fellowship is also given to the winning journalist. So far three Indian journalists have also won this coveted scholarship.
