Journalist thrashed by rivals

BAHAWALNAGAR, Jan 26: Unidentified people injured a student leader-cum-journalist at the canteen of local government college on Sunday night.

The police have arrested one of the suspects and are conducting raids to arrest his accomplices.

Sajjad Haider Wattoo, who is senior vice-president of MSF’s Punjab chapter, and correspondent of Daily Express, was taken to DHQ Hospital in critical condition.

A group of assailants, allegedly belonging to Wattoo’s rival group, equipped with batons and iron rods stormed the canteen where Wattoo was taking tea. They gave him a sound thrashing and fled before office-bearers of local press club and some students reached there and later shifted the injured to the hospital.

Local journalists and students have condemned the attack and demanded early arrest of the suspects.

The students also boycotted the classes and staged a protest rally from Rafiq Shah Chowk to Sutlej Chowk. The protesters were chanting slogans against a local MPA alleging that he was involved in the incident.
