Journalist severely beaten by police

Zulfiqar Ali Khaskheli, a correspondent in the town of Nawabshah for the Hyderabad-based, Sindhi-language daily “Ibrat”, was severely beaten by police. It is feared that he may lose his eyesight and hearing.

The journalist was beaten so severely that he had to be admitted to the People’s Medical College Hospital in Nawabshah. Visitors have not been allowed to see the journalist, who has been chained and handcuffed in the hospital. Journalists and social organisations in Nawabshah and other areas of Sindh province have condemned the attack on Khaskheli and have been protesting his arrest.

Local journalists said Nawabshah’s chief of police, District Police Officer (DPO) Sarwar Jamali arrested Khaskheli on April 11, 2004 in a false case for reporting on gambling operations in the district under the DPO’s command.

The journalists have demanded that the authorities immediately suspend the DPO and order an inquiry into the incident.
