Journalist released on bail

On April 21, 2004, journalist Zulfiqar Ali Khaskheli was granted bail and was discharged from People’s Medical College Hospital in Nawabshah where he was admitted after getting injured in police custody.

Background:

Zulfiqar Ali Khaskheli, a correspondent in the town of Nawabshah for the Hyderabad-based, Sindhi-language daily Ibrat, was severely beaten by police. It was feared that he might lose his eyesight and hearing.

The journalist was beaten so severely that he had to be admitted to the People’s Medical College Hospital in Nawabshah. Visitors were not allowed to see the chained and handcuffed journalist in the hospital. Journalists and social organizations in Nawabshah and other areas of Sindh province condemned the attack on Khaskheli and were protesting his arrest.

Local journalists said Nawabshah’s chief of police; District Police Officer (DPO) Sarwar Jamali arrested Khaskheli on April 11, 2004 in a false case for reporting on gambling operations in the district under the DPO’s command.

The journalists demanded that the authorities immediately suspend the DPO and order an inquiry into the incident.
