Journalist Muhammad Bachal Ghunio Fatally Shot in Ghotki, Sindh Government Vows Crackdown on Criminal Gangs
Muhammad Bachal Ghunio, a reporter for Awaaz TV, was fatally shot in the Rounti area of Ghotki district, Sindh on August 26th. Ghunio was on his way to his fields when he was ambushed by unidentified gunmen, an attack that locals attribute to criminal gangs known as dacoits. His body has been shifted to the Ubauro hospital for postmortem examination.
The killing has ignited protests from Ghunio’s family, who gathered outside the Senior Superintendent of Police’s office in Mirpur Mathelo, demanding swift justice. Ghunio’s young son revealed that his father had longstanding disputes with certain community members, despite previous attempts to resolve these issues.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has ordered the police to intensify operations against criminal elements in the katcha areas and ensure the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. Shah expressed his condolences to Ghunio’s family and reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to protecting press freedom.
Governor Kamran Tessori also took notice of the murder, calling for a transparent investigation and emphasizing the need for justice. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has ordered a detailed report on the incident and directed the use of advanced investigative tools to trace the attackers. He urged law enforcement to expedite anti-dacoit operations in the region.
Political leaders, including PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, condemned the murder. Bhutto-Zardari reiterated his party’s support for press freedom, while Memon condemned the attack on journalism as an unacceptable assault on the free press.
