Journalist calls for Pearl’s release

PESHAWAR- A French journalist who had faced detention at the hands of the Taliban called on Monday for the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

In a statement, Michel Peyrard, a Paris-based journalist of a magazine, narrated how he was arrested in October last year in Goshta, Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, for making illegal entry.

In his appeal released through Reporters Sans Frontiers, Peyrard recalled that he was handed over to the Taliban secret police and held under detention for 26 days. “Even though this was a difficult period, the Taliban authorities acknowledged my status as a journalist,” he said.

Peyrard said Pearl too was a journalist and widely respected in the profession. “He is a journalist first and an American later. You know that he is not in any way responsible for his country’s policies. Release him and you will ennoble yourself and Islam, a religion of compassion.”
