Jang Group’s plea: IHC gives last chance to channel, anchor

ISLAMABAD: On the Jang Group’s petition, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Muhammad Anwar Khan Kasi on Thursday gave last chance to a private channel and its anchor for submission of reply till February 6.

The Jang Group counsel informed the court that despite passage of two months, the private channel and its anchor had neither submitted a reply nor signed the power of attorney to meet the legal requirements.

CJ Anwar Kasi reprimanded the counsel for the private channel and gave him the last chance to submit a reply. The Jang Group counsel stated in the court that allegations were being levelled in the private channel’s programmes but any evidence was not being furnished in the court.

The Jang Group lawyers, referring to their applications, repeated their plea that the TV anchor should be arrested or any other legal procedure should be adopted to get the court order implemented.

The Jang Group had filed a petition seeking an end to a slanderous campaign launched by the anchor. The court had issued a stay order and sought a reply from the respondents who did not file a response to the petition, and continued with their propaganda campaign upon which the Jang Group had filed a contempt of court application against the respondents. On Thursday, the court gave the last chance to the channel and the anchor to file their reply and adjourned the hearing till February 6.

The court set aside two contempt of court applications moved by Jang Group’s lawyers, Mohsin Akhter Kayani and Faisal Iqbal, remarking that it had already been hearing a contempt application and had notices for reply.

Jang Group’s lawyers stated that neither the respondents had filed their reply nor stopped their negative propaganda, and requested the court to proceed against them at which the court gave last chance to the respondents.
