Islamabad Police Launch 24/7 Social Media Monitoring Cell to Combat Hate Speech During Muharram

Pakistan Press Foundation

The Islamabad Police have set up a dedicated social media monitoring cell to identify and curb hate speech during the holy month of Muharram. This initiative aims to maintain peace and prevent the spread of sectarian hatred.

The cell will closely monitor social media platforms including WhatsApp to detect and act against individuals promoting hate and violence. The police will use advanced technology to scan for hate speech and inflammatory content.

The spokesperson issued a stern warning to those sharing hate content during Muharram, stating, “Cases will be lodged in the cyber crime cell against such persons.” This initiative aims to ensure a peaceful observance of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.

The newly established cell, operating under the supervision of the AIG Operations, will operate around the clock throughout Muharram, ensuring real-time surveillance. The initiative comes as a precautionary measure to maintain public order during the sensitive period.

Islamabad Police have urged citizens to report any suspicious activities or content that could incite violence. They have also warned that individuals found spreading hate speech will face strict legal actions.

In an effort to curb the spread of hate material on the internet, provincial governments had earlier sought  a six-day suspension of social media applications for about a week during Muharram. However, the federal government has not yet made a decision on this request.
