ISLAMABAD: Hundreds of journalists and civil society members of twin cities staged a protest rally outside the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club camp office against threats given to senior journalist M. Ziauddin by President Pervez Musharraf in London.

The participants of the rally were holding banners and placards inscribed with anti-government and anti-Musharraf slogans. They chanted slogans condemning the mistreatment of a senior journalist.

On the occasion, renowned journalist and anchorperson of Geo TV’s programme ‘Capital Talk’ Hamid Mir said by meting out such treatment to a senior journalist the government has proved how it wants to treat the media. RIUJ President Afzal Butt, in his address, condemned the incident. He said it is common practice that whenever a minister threatens any journalist the intelligence agencies make the life of that journalist and his whole family miserable.

Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), has also condemned the remarks of President Pervez Musharraf against one of the most respected journalists of Pakistan saying it was an insult to the entire community. The PFUJ also demanded an apology. PFUJ warned against any harm caused to Mr Ziauddin or his family and said the government will be responsible. The PFUJ has directed its affiliated unions to protest against the remarks.
